It is not hyperbole to say that there is an addiction crisis currently happening in the United States. While this crisis is mostly fueled by the opioid epidemic, it also exists among all types of addiction.

Yes, addiction is currently like a fire raging out of control in the U.S. This fire has only gotten worse since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many experts thinking that addiction will only become more prevalent. That is why we here at The Phoenix Recovery Center continue to make it our ultimate goal to fight the fire of addiction with our mission  of recovery.

Understanding the Prevalence of Addiction in the U.S.

For anyone that may think this “crisis statement” is overblown, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recently released some statistics to support it. According to NIDA, in 2022 “20.4 million people in the United States were diagnosed with [substance use disorder] in the past year.” Now, this does not even include the individuals already diagnosed with substance use disorder (SUD), or those who have failed to have been diagnosed as of yet. Moreover, these are not the only staggering statistics regarding all types of addiction.

According to NIDA, “Only 10.3 percent of people with past-year SUD received SUD treatment,” and “Nearly 71,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2019.” Sadly, to reiterate, these numbers are only anticipated to grow.

Sometimes these types of numbers can be so staggering that they can make an individual feel like a statistic. However, as a statistic, a person may also feel like they are only going to get lost in the vastness of the recovery industry. This is false. The key is finding a recovery center that is focused directly on them. Also, statistics like these can make people feel separated because their addiction doesn’t appear in the numbers; so they opt not to seek treatment. This is also false. There is treatment for all types of addiction, and all people struggling with addiction deserve effective treatment.

What Are the Five Levels of Addiction Treatment?

According to the The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) the five levels of addiction treatment include:

  1. Early intervention care
  2. Outpatient treatment
  3. Intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization treatment
  4. Inpatient or residential treatment
  5. Medically managed inpatient intensive treatment

The level of treatment recommended depends on the current level of addiction. Reaching out to the right mental health care professional and/or the right well-regarded recovery center can make the difference between participating in the right treatment program the first time or participating in the wrong one and achieving no results.

When it comes to addiction and the right treatment choice, the best question to ask is perhaps not what type of addiction one has but rather how that addiction has progressed. The progression of a specific addiction generally means the level of treatment an individual should receive.

SUDs occur in four stages, from the “experimentation” stage to the “addiction” stage, and within each of these stages also exists levels of severity. For those struggling with the fourth stage of addiction, a residential treatment program is most likely the best choice to start with (though this should always be determined by a professional). A residential treatment program can ensure the best transition out from detox as well as provide the close monitoring needed in early recovery from this stage. Now, for any of the lesser stages, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) may be the best choice.

Is an Intensive Outpatient Program Right for All Types of Addiction?

An IOP is a great option for individuals that are still sufficiently able to manage their day-to-day lives as they go through treatment. Regarding whether an IOP is right for all types of addiction, the answer is that it is always relative to the individual and their personal recovery needs.

An IOP can also be greatly beneficial for those individuals that have gone through residential treatment and are ready to transition to a less intensive level of treatment. IOPs can also be ideal for individuals that don’t have the flexibility or means in their schedule to stay in a residential treatment center.

The Importance of Individualized Care at the Phoenix Recovery Center

Here at The Phoenix Recovery Center, we know that everyone has individual recovery needs which is why we offer multiple comprehensive treatment program options. We have exceptional residential, IOP, and general outpatient programs (GOP) that can be structured and customized depending on a person’s recovery needs.

According to SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), “Nearly 1 in 3 adults had either a substance use disorder or any mental illness in the past year, and 46 percent of young adults 18-25 had either a substance use disorder or any mental illness.” These statistics are simply too high. But, here at the Phoenix Recovery Center, we are not going to be discouraged by them. We are going to strengthen our resolve to combat them – one client at a time.
