There is no doubt that seeking treatment for issues of mental and behavioral health can be one of the most daunting choices a person will ever have to make. However, it may also be the best choice that a person will ever make in their life.
We here at The Phoenix Recovery Center understand the hesitancy that people feel about treatment and recovery. This is especially true when it comes to choosing a more intensive residential treatment program. We understand because most of us have gone through the experience ourselves. This is why we also understand how treatment and recovery can not only change our lives but, in many instances, save them as well.
Understanding the Link Between Mental and Behavioral Health
Sometimes we have cognitive dissidence when it comes to thinking about mental and behavioral health. That is because we may interpret them as two wholly different things. While yes, of course, they are different in the sense that one resides in the mind and one presents itself externally, they are often fully entwined with one another.
Ultimately, the best way to think about mental and behavioral health is to think about how our cognitions (thoughts) and emotions (feelings) affect our behaviors. So, while this is the way it works with everyone, those with mental health issues will also experience disorders in their behavioral health.
Now, because mental and behavioral health issues are so integrated with one another, they must also be treated alongside one another. If both the internal and the external are not treated in tandem, it is highly unlikely that a successful long-term recovery can be accomplished.
Treating Mental and Behavioral Health at the Same Time
What does treating mental and behavioral health issues at the same time look like? Well, they honestly don’t look that different than solely treating one or the other. Because they are so fused together, when you treat one issue, you invariably also treat the other.
Perhaps the most common way to treat mental and behavioral health issues is to treat them via various forms of therapy. These can be both individual and group therapies. Individual therapies, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can get to the underlying mental health issues that cause certain behaviors so eventually, these behaviors can be managed, modified, or mitigated.
Now, on the other hand, group therapy can be highly beneficial because it connects people that are dealing with shared issues and thus has had shared experiences. This group setting can help hold a mirror up so one can see that they are not wholly unique in their struggles and that they are also capable of recovery. It is also true that all of these therapies are available and utilized in both residential and outpatient treatment programs.
The Benefits of Residential Treatment for Mental and Behavioral Health Issues
While there are various benefits to every treatment program, for individuals with more severe and pronounced issues, a residential mental and behavioral health treatment program may be the best fit. This is because a residential program allows 24/7 access to a specialist. In addition, this access can allow someone to address a situation quickly at the moment rather than waiting until it is too late.
For example, take someone that is in recovery for substance use disorder (SUD). The behavioral issue resides in habitual use, and the mental issues reside in the psychological “cravings” of the mind. This individual is best suited for residential care at the beginning because when those cravings trigger those behaviors, a mental health care professional and other individuals with shared experience can be right there to help them through it.
Residential care can also be beneficial for those individuals that are struggling from exhaustion. Have no doubt, mental health and behavioral health struggles can take a serious toll on one’s mind, body, and soul. A residential program allows for a full reset before eventually transitioning to an outpatient program and back out into everyday life.
